ACARA reports NAPLAN national results for each year level tested (Years 3, 5, 7 and 9) and domain for Australia as a whole, by state/territory and by a number of demographic subgroups.
The results show how students have progressed in literacy and numeracy across the years of schooling.
Which results are displayed here
In 2023, we reset the NAPLAN measurement scales and time series. This means you can't compare NAPLAN achievement prior to 2023 to that from 2023 onwards.

We also established 4 levels of proficiency.
The interactive displays on this page show NAPLAN achievement as:
- Average NAPLAN scores,
- Percentages of students achieving within the 4 proficiency levels for each year level and domain.
School level results are presented on the My School website. Each year's school level results are released in December.
Tasmanian results in 2026
Participation levels in Tasmania were too low in 2026 to support valid reporting of achievement. This has been indicated by use of the code "s.p." where results would normally have appeared.
Writing results in 2026
A technical issue affecting the assessment platform impacted many students in Years 5, 7 and 9 who sat their writing test on 11 March 2026.
Analysis of the disruption has determined that the national writing results have been minimally impacted and can validly be reported.
ACARA acknowledges that the effects of disruptions will have varied among students, schools and subgroups. Caution should be applied in interpreting writing results in 2026.
Comparison of results
Pairwise comparisons
Pairwise comparisons of average NAPLAN scores are made between states/territories on the state comparison page, between subgroups on the subgroup comparison page, and between the selected and previous calendar year on the achievement over time page.
All reported comparisons are tested for statistical significance. Tests for statistical significance ensure that reported differences are not merely caused by chance but reflect real differences. These tests, however, do not describe the size of the difference. Therefore, a representation of the nature of the difference is provided.
Nature of the difference
The nature of the difference is an effect size measure. It assists with interpreting the results by comparing the magnitude of a significant difference with an effect size criterion, resulting in a label for the size of the difference.
The nature of the difference is reported as follows for comparisons between states/territories and between subgroups:
- substantially above/below refers to a difference that is statistically significant and large in size
- above/below refers to a difference that is statistically significant and small in size
- close to refers to a difference that is either not statistically significant or negligible in size
