Student achievement is reported as average NAPLAN scores, as percentages of students achieving the national minimum standard and as percentages of students achieving within bands for each domain and year level.

The time series page provides a set of NAPLAN results from the base year to the current year and comparisons of the current against previous and base years.

NAPLAN results are available with selected analysis in the interactive report below. All results can also be downloaded as a single Microsoft Excel file for further analysis.

Comparison of results

Pairwise comparisons

Pairwise comparisons are made for results between the current year and previous year, and between the current year and base year. For reading, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy, the base year is 2008. For writing, the base year is 2011.

In addition, the average annual change in achievement is reported, as well as an indicator of non-linear long-term trends.
All reported comparisons were tested for statistical significance. Tests for statistical significance ensure that reported differences are not merely caused by chance, but reflect real differences. These tests, however, do not describe the size of the difference. Therefore, a representation of the nature of the difference is provided.

Nature of the difference

The nature of the difference is an effect size measure. It helps interpreting the results by comparing the magnitude of a significant difference with an effect size criterion, resulting in a label for the size of the difference.
The nature of the difference is reported as follows for comparisons with the previous year or the base year:

substantially above/below refers to a difference that is statistically significant and substantial in size
above/below refers to a difference that is statistically significant and small in size
close to refers to differences that are not statistically significant differences or negligible in size

The Key Performance Measures (KPMs) related to NAPLAN specified in the Measurement Framework for Schooling in Australia are:

Student participation in NAPLAN
Key Performance Measure 1(d) Proportion of students participating in NAPLAN for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 for Reading, Writing and Numeracy.

Key Performance Measure 2(a) Proportion of students achieving at or above the national minimum standard for Reading
Key Performance Measure 2(b) NAPLAN mean scale scores for Reading
Key Performance Measure 2(c) Proportion of students achieving at or above the national minimum standard for Writing
Key Performance Measure 2(d) NAPLAN mean scale scores for Writing

Additional Analysis

Additional Analysis

For NAPLAN 2021, a set of additional analyses were performed that have not been included in previous National Reports. These additional analyses include trends in achievement gaps between certain groups since 2016. The year 2016 was chosen as the base year, because classification of the geographic locations changed in that year. Note: Education ministers made the decision to cancel NAPLAN in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, there are no results available for 2020 in the trends charts.
