National Report on Schooling in Australia (ANR) – December 2023 Release

Five sections of the National Report on Schooling in Australia have been updated with the latest information. 

This latest release – the third release in the new progressive release program for the report – highlights progress against nationally agreed policy initiatives by Australia’s school education sector in the areas of:

  • student attendance (2023)
  • Vocational Education and Training (2023)
  • Year 12 certification rates (2022)
  • student attainment, and participation in education (2023)
  • training and employment (2023)

Some of the highlights include:

  • An increase in school attendance rates from Years 1-10 across all states and territories and school sectors from 86.5% in 2022 to 88.6% in 2023. The percentage of students with above 90 per cent attendance increased from 49.9% in 2022 to 61.6% in 2023. 
  • In 2022, participation in Vocational Education Training (VET) among 15-19-year-olds across Australia returned to pre-COVID levels, with 26.3% completing at least one unit of competency at AQF Certificate II or above.   
  • Over the period from 2012 to 2022, Year 12 certification rates increased by 3.3 percentage points.
  • Since 2013, the proportion of 20–24-year-olds who had attained at least Year 12 or AQF Certificate II or above has risen from 86.7% to 90.4%. 
  • The proportion of 17–24-year-olds who had left school and were fully engaged in education, training or work increased from 75% in 2022 to 75.4% in 2023. This represents a full recovery to pre-pandemic levels.
The full 2022 report will be compiled and released in February 2024.


Latest information on the nation's schools now live on My School website

Parents, carers and wider school communities can now access the latest information on the My School website, which been updated for 2023 with new profile information on schools and the latest school-level NAPLAN data.
 
The 2023 My School update includes the following:

  • 2023 NAPLAN results for schools
  • 2023 school profile and population data
  • 2023 school attendance data
  • 2022 school financial information, including capital expenditure and funding sources
  • 2022 Vocational education training participation and outcomes
  • 2022 year 12 certifications
 
“My School provides data on schooling right across Australia, helping parents, carers, schools and governments to understand the performance of schools,” said ACARA CEO, Stephen Gniel. 
 
“It’s an important resource for parents and carers to make informed decisions about their children’s schooling. It also provides principals and teachers with important insights into school performance, supporting and driving improvements across the nation.”
