In developing the Australian Curriculum, ACARA is committed to ensuring that its curriculum work acknowledges the need for all Australian children to “understand and acknowledge the value of Indigenous cultures and possess the knowledge, skills and understanding to contribute to, and benefit from, reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.” (Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians)

ACARA has engaged with experts across the state and territory curriculum and school authorities and representatives from the Indigenous Education Consultative Bodies (IECBs) through face to face national forums in March and September 2009.

ACARA has also included Indigenous Australians as members of the learning area advisory panels to provide expert Indigenous perspectives in the writing of the curriculum content in English, mathematics, science and history.

ACARA is also establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander advisory panel to guide the development of the Australian curriculum.
